Tennis Roundup : McEnroe, Connors Reach Final

John McEnroe defeated defending champion Stefan Edberg of Sweden, 7-6, 6-2, Saturday night to set up a meeting with second-seeded Jimmy Connors today in the final of the $289,000 Transamerica Open tennis tournament at San Francisco’s Cow Palace.

Connors, seeking his first tournament victory since 1984, made the final when third-seeded Anders Jarryd retired with a painful knee. Connors led, 6-7, 6-1, 2-0, when the Swede was forced to withdraw.

Top-seeded Pam Shriver beat Zina Garrison, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1, to advance to today’s final of the $100,000 Audi Challenge tournament at San Diego.

In the other semifinal, second-seeded Bonnie Gadusak defeated Stephanie Rehe, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

At Barcelona, Spain, Andreas Maurer of West Germany and Kent Carlsson of Sweden won their semifinal matches in the $225,000 Conde de Godo tournament. Maurer defeated Austrian Horst Skoff, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5, and Carlsson beat Tomas Smid of Austria, 7-6, 6-2.
