Major traffic diversions and construction highlight schedules for the first phase of Metro Rail:

1986

In November, Hill Street to be converted to one-way southbound between Temple and 12th streets. Three lanes to be open for automobile traffic during rush hour, two lanes other times. More than 30 bus lines rerouted eastward away from Hill Street.

Construction to begin on relocation of utility vaults and building basements that extend into path of subway along Hill Street between 1st and 7th streets.

Train yard construction to begin near Union Station.

1987

In February, tunneling to begin between 5th and Hill streets and Union Station. Weeks later, tunneling to begin between 7th and Flower streets and Alvarado Street beneath Wilshire Boulevard.

Later, construction to begin on the first-phase stations at Union Station, Civic Center, 7th and Flower streets, 5th and Hill streets and Alvarado Street. Tunneling begins between 5th and Hill streets and 7th and Flower streets.

1988

Track work to begin in completed tunnel sections.

Production of train cars, automatic control systems and other operational hardware to begin.

1989

Finishing work on interior of stations to begin.

1990

Tunnel work to be completed on first 4.4-mile section of Metro Rail. Station and track work continue.

1991

Last of train cars delivered. Track work and other operational equipment in place. Station work to be completed.

Late in the year, testing to begin of vehicles and control systems.

1992

Passenger service to begin at mid-year.
