Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, will recount her experiences as an astronaut and discuss the future of the space program in a lecture Friday sponsored by UC Irvine.

Her lecture will begin at 8 p.m. at South Coast Community Church, 5120 Bonita Canyon Drive, Irvine.

Ride is the university’s 1986 Leona Gerard Distinguished Lecturer; her appearance is part of a program begun in 1980 to bring visiting lecturers who are “innovative and offer enrichment to feeling and mind” to the campus, according to a UCI spokeswoman. Ride originally was scheduled to speak early this year, but her appearance was canceled after the Challenger disaster.
