A Calabasas environmentalist has been picked to take over a Topanga-Las Virgenes Resource Conservation District seat left vacant last month after the death of a veteran board member.

Dan Washburn will serve the remaining two years of the director’s post, left vacant by the Aug. 28 death of Albert J. Hoyt, who suffered a heart attack.

An article on Thursday incorrectly identified an appointee to the Topanga-Las Virgenes Resource Conservation District. He is Calabasas resident Dennis Washburn, president of the Las Virgenes Homeowners Federation.

Washburn was selected from seven applicants on a 3-1 board vote, District Clerk Elizabeth Douphner said Wednesday. He will take office Oct. 27.

Washburn, an advertising executive, is president of the Las Virgenes Homeowners Federation, a coalition of 17 neighborhood groups situated between Woodland Hills and Westlake Village.

The federation has actively worked to slow development in the 80-square-mile Las Virgenes area, and has promoted parks and hiking trails in the Santa Monica Mountains.
