The Soviet Union defeated the United States in the final match of the semifinal round of the world men’s volleyball tournament at Nantes, France. The scores were 15-10, 15-9, 9-15, 15-12.
The winners of the Soviet Union vs. Bulgaria and the United States vs. Brazil games Saturday in Paris will meet Sunday for the title.
U.S. captain Karch Kiraly did not play because of a slight calf injury. He is expected to play Saturday.
The United States beat Brazil in the gold-medal game in the 1984 Olympic Games after losing to the Brazilians in pool play.
