Southlanders in the Honors Spotlight
Tribute dinners are for special people. They’re in abundance this month.
When Casa Colina celebrates its 50th anniversary Nov. 6 at the Century Plaza--its Tribute to Courage Dinner--special honors will go to Rialto businessman Mike Smith, a Vietnam War helicopter pilot without mishap, paralyzed when his helicopter crashed during a crop-dusting assignment in the Coachella Valley in 1981. He’s now in real estate, also in a new career as director-in-training of Casa Colina’s Neurological Learning Center in Pasadena.
Howard P. Allen, president of Southern California Edison, chairs the tribute for Casa Colina, the rehabilitation service for disabled children and adults. Corporate leaders on the dinner committee include David E. Anderson, president, General Telephone; R. Stanton Avery, chairman, Avery International; Warren Christopher, senior partner, O’Melveny & Myers; Richard H. Deihl, president, H. F. Ahmanson & Co.; Lawrence C. Tolenaere, president, Ameron Inc.; Robert B. Lewis, chairman, FBC Industries, and more.
The Salvation Army Centennial Celebration Dinner with Gen. Eva Burrows will be a tribute to nonagenarian Mrs. Frank Roger Seaver. It’s Oct. 15 in the Grande Ballroom of the Sheraton Grande. Honorary co-chairmen will be the Steve Allens, Mrs. Margaret Martin Brock, Otis Chandler and Joseph J. Pinola. Mrs. John E. Flick is chairman of the Centennial Planning Committee. More involved are Dale F. Barlow, E. John Caldecott, Donald F. Hayes, William C. Lochmoeller, Mrs. Robert C. Hill, Keith Renken, Mrs. Leslie N. Shaw, Robert V. Sibert, Mrs. William French Smith, Donald F. Sorensen and Peter H. Ulrich.
Gen. Burrows is only the second woman to hold the office, following in the footsteps of Evangeline Booth, daughter of the Army’s founder William Booth, according to Lt. Col. David P. Riley, divisional commander.
Tributes Galore:
In celebration of California Confederation of the Arts’ 11th year, the 1986 congress dinner will recognize former presidents of the board of directors: William McClelland, Richard LeBlond Jr., Wallace Smith and Yankee Johnson. The Mayor’s Reception will be at 6 p.m. on the Pasadena City Hall Courtyard, followed by dinner at the Pasadena Hilton . . .
The theater was jammed and the memories are happy surrounding the memorial tribute to Vincente Minnelli recently at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Liza (his daughter, wearing a sable/wool St. Laurent suit) and Martin Scorsese emceed the tribute for the Department of Film. Betty Comden and Adolph Green told funny stories about Vincente while they were making “The Band Wagon.” Lee Minnelli, Vincente’s widow, wore his favorite navy blue Adolfo. Stephen Harvey, who’s doing a book on the late producer/director, introduced speakers. Around the room were Della Koenig, Robin Plunket, Maggi and Meg Newhouse. Lloyd and Ann Hand flew in from Washington on David Murdock’s plane. Producer Douglas Cramer came in from Los Angeles. Candy Bergen, Polly Bergen, Ed Bradley, Julie Stein, Joe Mankiewicz, Michael Powell, Robert De Niro, Pia Lindstrom, Andy Warhol, Yoko Ono, Marvin Hamlisch, Al and Dolly Hirschfeld all paid tribute . . .
Dr. Richard Treiman, immediate past chief of staff of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, will be honored for his years of service Oct. 19 at the Beverly Hilton. Dr. Eliot and Marion Corday hosted a cocktail reception in their home for the committee planning the American Technion Society Maimonides Award Tribute. Dr. Albert Katz, chief of staff, is dinner committee chairman . . .
Friends of the Los Angeles Free Clinic host a starting gate cocktail party Oct. 14 at the Beverly Hills home of Joan and Joel M. Cohen to honor Jack Klugman . . .
Marcia Israel is spending a few days in Morocco with her goddaughter Princess Lalla Joumala before her wedding and the official wedding reception Oct. 11 hosted by King Hassan II. However, she’ll miss the big event there because she’s due here for “An Evening for Marcia Israel” at the Beverly Wilshire the same night. Cedars-Sinai’s Fashion Industries Guild will salute the creator, president and chief executive officer of Judy’s, a group of 66 specialty fashion stores, and of G.HQ. for Men, 24 more stores. Jon Bernstein is dinner chairman, and president Shelly Goldman and co-chair Enid Goldman are arranging the 29th annual fund-raiser . . .
Tiffany & Co. is hosting a champagne toast to honor John Loring and his new Doubleday publication, “Tiffany Taste.” It’s Monday in Beverly Hills, at Tiffany & Co., naturally . . .
Cheryl and Bill Doyle and Carolyn and Chuck Miller surprised author/television writer Deborah Sherwood LaScala with an autograph cocktail party at Hotel Le Bel Age last Sunday to welcome her novel, “Winds of Secret Desire” . . .
Elegant garden garb is expected Sunday afternoon when Childhelp USA, the Santa Barbara chapter, celebrates romance. First item on the agenda at Chateau au Lac des Cygnes, home of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Bradley Scott, will be the autographing of “Guide to Romantic Living” by Jane Seymour. More than 170 of the Music Center’s most recent benefactors, Gold Circle Founders and Founders will be recognized by the center’s Board of Governors at 4 p.m. Wednesday in The Founders of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. (Fifteen are Benefactors--$100,000 or more; 46 Gold Circle--$60,000, and 112 Founders, $30,000.)
The event is called “Tea & Conversation with Sherrill Milnes.” He’s star of the Los Angeles Music Center Opera’s new production of Verdi’s “Otello.”
Fund chairman Robert H. Smith, vice chairman of Security Pacific, and vice chairman Peter K. Barker, partner of Goldman Sachs & Co., will attend the tea and do the introductions. It’s all part of the Music Center Unified Fund Campaign ’87 goal of $12.3 million.
