San Juan Capistrano City Manager Stephen B. Julian was arrested in San Clemente last weekend on suspicion of drunk driving, police said.

A police officer saw Julian driving erratically while traveling south on Interstate 5 near Avenida Palizada about 12:30 a.m. Saturday, Police Lt. Steve Bernardi said.

Julian, 45, was stopped and failed a field sobriety test, Bernardi said. He was booked at San Clemente City Jail and released later that morning on his own recognizance. He is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 29.

A blood sample was taken to determine the amount of alcohol in Julian’s blood, Bernardi said, but test results will not be available for one to two weeks.

Julian, city manager since 1981, said he was “very, very embarrassed by the whole situation. I regret very much being in any kind of a situation that’s embarrassing to the city . . . guilty or innocent.
