Leakage of radioactive water at the San Onofre nuclear power plant prompted engineers to design a new set of seals that will be installed in the Unit 3 system, Southern California Edison said. The reactor was shut down for four weeks of maintenance, which includes installation of the newly designed seals in the reactor cooling system. A spokesman for the company said no one had been exposed to radiation as a result of the leakage. The new seals were installed in Unit 2 six months ago and have been performing without any problem, the spokesman said.
