Britain’s opposition Labor Party rejected demands of its own left wing that it take Britain out of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and close all U.S. military bases if it comes to power in the next election. At its annual conference, the party adopted a resolution committing a Labor government to end British participation in President Reagan’s “Star Wars” missile defense program. The party reiterated its support of unilateral nuclear disarmament. Party leader Neil Kinnock said in an interview that he would expect the United States to close its nuclear bases and withdraw cruise missiles within a year of a Labor government’s taking office.
