Bruce Boxleitner’s image takes an elegant turn, as the actor and star of TV’s “Scarecrow and Mrs. King” becomes the new face of Lauder for Men fragrance and skin-care products. Robert Barnes, president of Estee Lauder USA, told Listen the 36-year-old actor was chosen to represent Lauder because he’s “a normal American man who portrays the image of our line . . . . He’s masculine, wholesome and a family man.” The first ads featuring Boxleitner will appear in November issues of People, Vogue, Cosmo and New York Times Magazine, in an ad campaign that will show the actor in “various life styles.” What gave Boxleitner the edge over about 15 contenders? He appeals equally to men and women. That’s crucial, Barnes said, considering 70% to 90% of all men’s cosmetics are still bought by women.
The party was billed as a rock ‘n’ roll prom--a show of L.A. designer Eletra Casadei’s spring ’87 TD4 prom dress line at the Vertigo club in Downtown Los Angeles. Not in the billing was the 11:30 p.m. arrival of rocker Mick Jagger, who, reliable sources told Listen, somehow got an invitation to the bash. Last week’s party, attended by about 700, was combination dance, fashion show and preview of Casadei’s new fashion video, “All Night Long,” which features music by Al Jarreau. Designer Casadei, clad in a cool, one-shoulder, “liquid metal” black gown, couldn’t help expressing a fan’s awe when she saw Jagger. “I can’t believe it. A legend,” she said in his direction. “What do you mean? Me or you?” the superstar responded.
Cultural advantages aside, the opening of the Orange County Performing Arts Center has meant a boon in business for the Amen Wardy boutique. The high-end Newport retailer says he sold more than 300 evening dresses for the center’s black-tie opening-night party last Monday night. Ungaros, Valentinos, Blasses, Galanoses, “just everybody,” Wardy says, adding that every customer wanted “glamour, glamour, glamour.” Four customers even bought full sets of David Webb jewelry--including necklace, ring, earrings and bracelet--to match their new gowns.
