Bill Seeks to Curb Imitation Handguns in Washington, D.C.
City Council member Nadine Winter, in an effort to reduce crime among youths in the District of Columbia, said Friday that she has proposed legislation to ban the sale and possession of imitation handguns to anyone under the age of 21.
Winter said that the Imitation Pistol Restriction Act of 1986 would not include “pink squirt guns” but would cover non-functioning guns that look real.
Violators would face up to one year in prison and a $1,000 fine.
If passed, the bill would be the first legislation of its kind in the country, a spokeswoman for the National Rifle Assn. said.
