Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone apologized to the Japanese people on national television Friday for remarks he made about race and education in the United States.

Nakasone, who was bitterly criticized in Japan and the United States for his comments, told the budget committee of Parliament’s lower house: “I am very sorry for making such comments. I would like to make efforts to restore Japanese honor.”

The committee meeting was broadcast by government-sponsored television. Nakasone did not follow the traditional Japanese custom of bowing when he made the apology.
