Action Shot : Tall Ships Will Race Today
Thousands of romantics touched with sea fever are expected to find a vantage point along the Orange County coast today to watch the second annual Southern California Tall Ships Race between Newport Beach and San Clemente.
Racing will be replicas of pirate brigs, trading vessels, fishing schooners and other square-rigged tall ships dating from the 1830s--including the state’s official 94-foot tops’l schooner, the Californian.
The ships will start in two classes a quarter-mile from the Balboa Pier--at Main Street and Balboa Boulevard in Newport Beach--and finish between two large orange inflated buoys just out to sea from the San Clemente Pier.
Start of the shoreline-hugging race is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., with the finish in San Clemente any time from 4:30 to 6 p.m., depending on wind conditions.
A prize of $5,000 and a silver cup will be awarded the winning vessel in the race, sponsored by the Orange County Marine Institute in conjunction with the Capistrano Bay Yacht Club. Information: (714) 496-2274.
