STEVEN SWITCHES . . . ONE MORE TIME

Share

First he was gay. But his father killed the man in his life. Then he was straight and married. But that didn’t last. Then he fell in love and was gay again. But the lover bit the dust in Moldavia. Last season he was . . . well, ambivalent.

That’s been the sexual history of Steven Carrington, played for the last five seasons of “Dynasty” by Jack Coleman.

Now we hear Steven’s going to flip-flop again--back to straight. By the end of this season, our information has it, Steven will re-marry his ex, Sammy Jo (Heather Locklear).

Coleman didn’t deny or confirm the switcheroo. He’d only say that Steven’s future is on the drawing board.

Coleman’s doing another split routine--bouncing back and forth from “Dynasty” days to four nights a week for the play “Bouncers” at the Tiffany Theater. Does his return to his theater roots foretell a diminishing of his TV role? Not at all, says Coleman, who revealed that Steven will move out of the Carrington mansion--nasty ol’ Alexis has moved in--to live with his young son.

But as to Steven being gay: “There are limits to where they (the writers) can go,” Coleman said, and he feels that the specter of AIDS adds to the dilemma. “There’s probably a problem with the subject. The subject has got to come up.” But “Dynasty” is “not a documentary” that should deal with social issues, he feels.

Coleman acknowledges that it’s possible to portray a gay character on TV without a connection to AIDS, but wondered, “How responsible would it be?”
