Pepperdine Edges UCI in Water Polo

Aaron Chasen scored with 17 seconds remaining Sunday to lift the Pepperdine University water polo team to a 12-11 victory over UC Irvine in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. match at Malibu.

The Anteaters led, 10-8, with 5:35 left, but Pepperdine scored three straight goals to take an 11-10 lead. Irvine’s Tom Warde scored his third goal to tie the score with 2:03 left, but the Anteaters couldn’t regain the lead.

Mike Halphide scored four goals and Kevin Wood added three for Irvine (3-1, 6-5). Sasa Poljak and Rafael Gandarillas each scored four goals for the Waves (2-0, 12-6).

The teams were both ranked seventh in the nation entering the match.
