Stephen Barry, who was Prince Charles’ personal valet for 12 years and whose published accounts of his tenure provoked a storm of protest in Great Britain, died of AIDS over the weekend, two wire services reported Monday.

Reuters quoted a close friend of Barry’s as saying Barry died Saturday at a London hospital. United Press International reported that British newspapers said he had died of acquired immune deficiency syndrome at St. Stephen’s Hospital.

The hospital confirmed his death at age 37 but would not give a cause.

Barry served Prince Charles from 1969 to 1981 and reportedly made $1 million from writing about his tenure.
