A $50,000 check to Su Casa Family and Support Center will be presented at a luncheon today by the Artesia-Cerritos branch of Soroptimist International, a women’s service club, as part of a campaign to raise money for a new shelter for the crisis center.

Su Casa, a nonprofit organization, provides temporary housing to battered women and their children.

The money will go toward the purchase of property and remodeling of a building on the property for the new shelter, said Christine Hach, executive director of Su Casa.

The organization, through fund-raisers with the help of the women’s club, donations and support through state and county funds, has raised nearly $200,000, but needs approximately $100,000 more, Hach said.

The organization recently made a down payment on the property, which is now in escrow, Hach said. The exact location of the property has not been publicly revealed to protect future clients. The current home, which is in Hawaiian Gardens, is too small, Hach said.

Su Casa had attempted to rent a home in Paramount several months ago but withdrew its request to the Paramount City Council when community fears were expressed. Hach said there were complaints that the home would entice other groups, such as alcohol and drug rehabilitation centers, to move to the city.
