Culver City : Landscaping Study Approved
The Redevelopment Agency on Monday approved a proposal by a Los Angeles engineering firm to study landscaping the area around Ship’s restaurant to join the diner’s parking lot with the Culver Center shopping mall on Overland Avenue.
The study, to be coordinated by Schaefer Dixon Associates, will analyze the soil beneath the restaurant and examine how the landscaping would affect structural support of the building. The study will cost about $25,000.
Agency officials decided last June to save Ship’s and widen Overland Avenue to improve traffic flow between Venice and Washington boulevards. An earlier proposal to demolish or move Ship’s to widen the street was opposed by the restaurant’s owners and preservationists who said the 30-year-old diner is a rare example of 1950s-style coffee shop architecture.
