Armand Hammer, chairman of Occidental Petroleum Corp., will take singer John Denver to the Soviet Union to perform a benefit concert for victims of the Chernobyl nuclear accident, an Occidental spokesman said in Los Angeles. Denver, famous for such songs as “Thank God I’m a Country Boy” and “Country Roads,” is scheduled to perform next Wednesday in the 3,000-seat Ukraine Theater. The theater is about 80 miles from Chernobyl, site of the April 26 nuclear accident that killed 31 people.
