‘Jury-Rigged’ Headline and the Judge’s Objection
Superior Court Judge Charles D. Sheldon (Letters, Sept. 18) was incorrect in his criticism of The Times’ punny headline, “Panel Jury-Rigged by the Judge.”
His interpretation of the part word “rigged” was out of context. The word “jury-rigged” is a distinct nautical term meaning fitted for temporary use, usually with makeshift materials; hence making do with substitutes.
“The bark having been dismasted, the crew jury-rigged a mains’l using a spar and a jib.”
