Traffic Deaths Decrease 21% in 3rd Quarter
There was a 21% decrease in fatal crashes on San Diego streets in the third quarter of 1986 compared to the same period last year, San Diego police reported Saturday.
Police Department spokesman Bill Robinson said 22 fatal crashes occurred from July 1 to Sept. 30 of this year, contrasted with 28 in 1985 in that period.
Nine pedestrians, nine motorcyclists, three motorists and one bicyclist were killed. Alcohol was a contributing factor in 50% of the fatal accidents, Robinson said.
The decrease could be attributed to the mandatory seat belt law that became effective Jan. 1, safer driving and stricter enforcement of traffic laws, he said.
