Week in Review : MAJOR EVENTS, IMAGES AND PEOPLE IN ORANGE COUNTY NEWS. : COUNTY : Tight Rein Put on ’87 Surf Meet
Still smarting from the Aug. 31 riot that rocked the coastal city, Huntington Beach announced on Monday that it would put a tight rein on the 1987 Op Surfing Championship.
The Huntington Beach City Council voted unanimously to endorse the recommendations of a panel appointed to investigate the Labor Day weekend melee. That panel, among other things, recommended that the surfing contest be held on a date other than the crowded Labor Day weekend.
Other recommendations to be implemented call for strict control of liquor and a limitation on coverage by cable television.
Rich Barnard, assistant city administrator, said the contest also will be without the usual accompanying events, such as the skateboarding and bikini contests.
