It’s basic that a jail should have strong locks, so Fresno County has delayed using a new temporary facility because officials feel the locks are too flimsy. Sheriff Harold McKinney had planned to move some prisoners to the new jail to alleviate the overcrowding that a judge has ordered halted at the main jail. But the move was delayed after an investigation of locks on fire doors. “The doors can be opened with a shove,” McKinney explained. “They are easier to get out of than the doors in your house. They are completely, completely unsuitable.” He said it will be four days or more before new locks can be ordered and installed. That means more prisoners may have to be released ahead of schedule.
