The first commemorative sign bearing the name of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Highway was unveiled Tuesday by state and transportation officials.

The ceremony at a tourist information center off Interstate 70 was conducted on what would have been Eisenhower’s 96th birthday. The new sign designated the former President as the “father of the interstate highway system.”

Eisenhower Highway was named by an act of Congress in 1973. It includes parts of Interstate 70 from Washington to Denver, Interstate 25 from Denver to Cheyenne, Wyo., and Interstate 80 from Cheyenne to San Francisco.
