James Malone, President Reagan’s nominee for U.S. ambassador to Belize, withdrew his name from consideration, bowing to a filibuster by Sen. Edward Zorinsky (D-Neb.) that could have delayed the Senate’s adjournment. Zorinsky said Malone violated a pledge to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on involvement with former law firm client Taiwan Power. According to Sen. Claiborne Pell (D-R.I.), Malone, while State Department assistant secretary for Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs, asked the Export-Import Bank president to approve a loan in 1982 for a Taiwan Power nuclear plant. Malone has denied any impropriety.
