Rosemead City Councilman Louis Tury Jr. was sentenced to six months in a halfway house for paying $20,000 in bribes to a defense company executive in return for doing business with Tury’s machine shop. U.S. District Judge Edward Rafeedie said Tury will be able to work weekdays at his business, Tury Precision Machining. Tury, 47, also was fined $1,000, placed on two years’ probation and ordered to perform 500 hours of community service. Rafeedie said the punishment was tempered because Tury paid the kickbacks out of “self-survival.” “It is clear the buyers who solicit these bribes are more culpable,” he added. Tury left court without comment. His attorney, Vincent Marella, said Tury will resign from his council post. Tury pleaded guilty Sept. 9 to mail fraud and kickback charges.
