Central Park Murder Suspect Accused of Theft
The handsome prep school graduate accused of strangling his girlfriend in Central Park surrendered to police today to face additional charges of burglary in connection with a series of thefts in Park Avenue apartments.
Robert Chambers, 20, is already accused of second-degree murder in the death of Jennifer Dawn Levin, 18. Prosecutors charge that he strangled Miss Levin in Central Park on Aug. 26, but he claims that he killed the young woman by accident during rough sex.
Chambers was indicted Tuesday and was charged today with three counts of second-degree burglary. He faces up to 15 years in jail on those charges.
Chambers is accused of burglarizing one apartment building on the wealthy stretch of Park Avenue on Sept. 20, 1985, and stealing jewelry and valuables.
Fingerprints Found
Assistant Dist. Atty. Linda Fairstein has said that Chambers admitted to committing several burglaries and that his fingerprints were found at the scene of one of them.
Chambers is also accused of helping David Fillyaw, 20, burglarize two apartments in a building on East 72nd Street on Sept. 26, 1985.
Chambers was freed on $150,000 bail--much of it raised by the proprietor of the yuppie bar he and Levin both frequented--on Oct. 1, three weeks after he was indicted for murder.
