San Jose Paper Guild Joins S.F. in Authorizing Strike
Joining their union colleagues at two San Francisco dailies, Newspaper Guild members at the San Jose Mercury News voted nearly unanimously Wednesday night to give their leaders strike authorization powers.
A guild spokesman said only five of the 400 to 450 union members present vocally opposed a strike. On Tuesday, all but two of more than 600 employees of the San Francisco Chronicle and the San Francisco Examiner voiced support for a strike if talks remain deadlocked.
Although no new talks are scheduled, a session may be held later this week, the guild spokesman said. Management wants to freeze wages at current levels for 18 months. The unions have demanded up to a 15% increase.
