Five men were indicted Wednesday on numerous drug charges resulting from the seizure of a methamphetamine laboratory, U.S. Atty. Peter Nunez announced.

One indictment charges that in 1984 and 1985, the men operated a lab in Riverside County to produce methamphetamine for distribution throughout Southern California. The lab was raided Jan. 17, by agents of the federal Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force.

Named in that indictment were Donald Dean Stenger Jr., 32, and Fred Earl Stenger, 28, both of San Diego; Wilfred Mayer, 54, and Robert Joseph Mayer, 29, both of Oceanside and Lawrence Paul Kallett, 28, of Del Mar. If convicted, the men could face a maximum penalty of 15 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine, Nunez said.

Donald Stenger was also named as an “organizer and leader in a continuing criminal enterprise,” a charge that carries a minimum penalty of 10 years to life and “the forfeiture of all assets purchased or acquired with drug profits.”

A second indictment returned Wednesday charges Wilfred Mayer with possession of 6 1/2 pounds of cocaine with intent to distribute.

Donald and Fred Stenger were being held without bail at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in downtown San Diego. Wilfred and Robert Mayer have been freed on $50,000 bail. A bench warrant has been issued for the arrest of Kallett, Nunez said.
