The State : UC Fresno Campus Urged

Responding to predictions that University of California enrollment will swell by 21% by the turn of the century, a member of the UC Board of Regents proposed building a 10th campus, to be located in Fresno. Leo S. Kolligian, a Fresno attorney, asked his colleagues to study the idea of a campus to serve the “neglected” Central Valley residents, but the board, meeting at UC Irvine, took no action. Kolligian said only 3% of the Central Valley’s high school graduates go to UC schools, compared to a statewide average of 7.5%, primarily because residents of the poorer, agricultural communities lack money to send their children away to college. The proposal was offered during discussion of a report projecting an increase of 22,775 undergraduate students in the next 15 years, over the current enrollment of 108,540.
