THE WORLD SERIES : New York Mets vs. Boston Red Sox : Joyner Due to Leave Hospital This Weekend

Angel first baseman Wally Joyner is expected to be released from St. Joseph’s Hospital in Orange sometime this weekend, Angel spokesman Tim Mead said Friday.

Joyner has been hospitalized since last Saturday with an infection in his right shin, which forced him to miss the last four games of the American League championship series. It was first believed that the infection had resulted from an insect or spider bite but Mead said that Joyner injured the shin when he was hit by a pitch in August in a game against Seattle. He said that the injury then festered after he slid into second base in the following series against Minnesota.

Without Joyner, the Angels lost the playoffs to the Boston Red Sox, four games to three.
