Torrance OKs More Homes for Park Del Amo
The City Council has approved a change in the massive Park Del Amo development that will increase density and bring town homes close to the noise of oil rigs.
The developer, Watt Homes Inc., sought the higher density on a 24-acre plot that stretches from Sepulveda Boulevard to Toledo Street just east of Madrona Marsh. On its eastern boundary lies an oil well site.
Watt’s revised plans call for 508 units, an increase of 86 from the previous plan.
Torrance building officials, citing complaints about pumping noise from an earlier phase of the project, argued that residential areas should be at least 100 feet from the oil rig property. The restriction would have eliminated 35 of the town homes.
But council members said noise levels might be lowered through design and landscaping and directed city officials to reach a compromise with the developer.
The vote to approve the revised plans was 6-0 with Councilman Bill Applegate abstaining. He owns a company that negotiated a land sale with the Park Del Amo developer.
