Reagan-Grobachev Meeting in Iceland
The naivete of the American people, including the media, is limitless. In the wake of Reykjavik, the criticism of Reagan in the press and TV has been muted, courteous, and waffling.
The President had just rejected what might have been an end to the arms race. He had just turned his back on eliminating, perhaps for all time, the fear of nuclear war that has terrified Americans for two generations. Why? Because it would have meant an end to his beloved Star Wars.
In his address to the American people, Reagan spoke as though the Russians had asked us to give up a revered pillar of America--our Monroe Doctrine, our First Amendment freedoms, our wheated plains.
What this old man has done is barter away our future for a benighted, technological rotten egg that was hatched only 35 months ago. Why don’t we admit it?
