Assessor Advises Checking Tax Bill for Exemption

When you examine the Los Angeles County property tax bill you may have received in the mail last week, be sure to check to see if you’re getting the $7,000 homeowners’ exemption that you are entitled to, warns Alexander Pope, county assessor.

“The 1986 assessment roll lists more than 175,000 properties which appear to qualify for the exemption, but whose owners have not claimed it,” he said. “That’s a total of 175,000 taxpayers who may be missing an opportunity to reduce their property tax bills by about $70 per year.”

To be eligible for the exemption, property owners must own and occupy the home they claim as their principal residence on the March 1 lien date, Pope added.
