Marmont Memories
The article brought back fond memories of a time when Hollywood was a great place to live. My wife and I are both Hollywood High School graduates (classes of 1940 and 1937) and share some wonderful memories of the era. I also am a Sheriff’s Department retiree and in the 1950s worked the vice detail with a beat of “everything west of the Hall of Justice to the breakers of the ocean.”
Hodenfield describes the Garden of Allah as a party house, and well it was. There was a unique fact about its cocktail lounge that few people (except those of us who had to) knew or cared about. The room was situated east to west. The actual bar was on the south side of the room and in county, or sheriff’s, jurisdiction; the booths and tables were city, or LAPD, jurisdiction.
