MEGADETH: SONIC KO

Share

Megadeth’s leader Dave Mustaine said recently that after performing its fiery thrash-metal, the band feels like it’s just been pummeled by Marvin Hagler.

Mustaine should try being on the receiving end of the quartet’s noggin-rattling attack. At the Country Club Friday, Megadeth delivered an impressive string of sonic knockouts, supporting the notion that this group is a real contender.

But these local boys don’t just rely on aggression or brute strength. On many songs, they flew through intricate arrangements and multiple tempo changes, stitching together a crazy quilt of metal riffs and rhythms. And the lyrics Mustaine barked over this mercurial music often reflected more thought and depth than we’re used to from head-bangers.

Where Megadeth faltered was in not fully projecting its colorful personality. There were flashes of wry humor, and playing up this lighter side might establish a broader, warmer link with the audience.
