An American citizen suspected of being a former Irish Republican Army gunman was flown to England to face charges of murdering a London policeman. U.S. Atty. Joseph Russoniello in San Francisco said William Joseph Quinn, a San Francisco resident charged with the shooting death of police constable Stephen Tibble on a London street in February, 1975, was transferred to British custody without advance notice and left Travis Air Force Base on board a Royal Air Force plane because of security concerns. “This man is still being held up as a hero” by IRA supporters, Russoniello said. Quinn had resisted extradition on grounds that the slaying of Tibble was a political crime, but the U.S. Supreme Court last week denied a hearing.
