Irvine : 200 Navy Reservists Called for One-Day Duty

Share

An estimated 200 Navy reservists will be mobilized in the county Saturday in a special test to prepare for a coming nationwide program.

Members of the Individual Ready Reserves have been ordered to report to the Navy Reserve Center on Barranca Road in Irvine for a day of active duty, according to Lt. Cmdr. Jennifer Hunter, commander of the center.

“Basically we will be trying to verify that our pool is current and ready to be mobilized,” Hunter said. “We will be updating their personnel records, determining whether they are physically ready for mobilization, and whether anything like dependency status or work conflicts might affect their mobilization status.”

The call-up, along with a similar mobilization effort in Pittsburgh, is the first of three such recalls planned over the next three weekends in five cities across the United States in preparation for a nationwide mobilization next spring.

Individual Ready Reservists are military personnel who, after having served on active duty, fulfill their reserve obligation without being assigned to a regular reserve unit.
