Letters : Sympathy for Thief

An article on Sept. 24 tells of still another case of a burglar’s receiving undue sympathy. The fact is that David Mills committed a crime by breaking into an animal shelter to steal a dog, and he should not be pitied.

The dog in question is a stray. As such, he must be held at the shelter for a minimum of seven days before being placed for adoption. How can a pet owner hope to find his missing dog or cat during this seven-day period if someone takes it upon himself to steal what might be a very much loved and missed member of a family desperately searching for their beloved pet? In addition, the card on this dog’s cage clearly stated that he would have been available for adoption on Sept. 26.

Mills stated that he wanted the dog to replace a pet that had previously died. Loving animals as I do, I can certainly understand that. What I can not understand is how he can justifiably break in and steal a dog. If he had a child that had died, would that have given him the right to steal an orphan?
