TARANTO, Italy — Despite a bullet wound in the abdomen, a train guard fought off two bandits who tried Tuesday to grab a strongbox containing $14,000 in cash, police reported.
The bandits, armed with pistols, forced their way into the car while the train was halted at Monteiasi, nine miles east of Taranto on the heel of the Italian boot.
They shot train guard Antonio Buscicchio, 34, in the abdomen. But the guard fought back so strongly with kicks and punches that the bandits gave up the struggle and fled empty-handed, authorities said. Other members of the train crew took Buscicchio to a local hospital.
Police said the strongbox Buscicchio was guarding contained around 20 million lire ($14,000) in ticket receipts from stations along the line.
