The Fullerton City Council voted unanimously in favor of the construction of a hotel and stadium-sports complex on the campus of Cal State Fullerton. Voting as the city Redevelopment Agency, the council endorsed 5 to 0 the proposed 10,000-seat sports stadium, 2,000-seat baseball pavilion and $16-million Marriott Hotel. An estimated 75 people attended the 2 1/2-hour council meeting. Twelve members of the audience spoke, said Sylvia Palmer, city public information officer, and their response was “mostly favorable. The biggest opposition was voiced by the Chamber of Commerce, which apparently feels that the conference facilities proposed are inadequate.” An administrative committee of the California State University system and the California State University Board of Trustees still must vote on the project. If the project receives final approval, construction is scheduled to begin next summer on the hotel, which would be the only such commercial structure on public university property in the state.
