Political Briefs : McCarthy, Curb: Better of Worst?

Share

Democratic Lt. Gov. Leo T. McCarthy admitted that he has a miserable record of attendance at meetings of the State Lands Commission--though a voting member, he has been present for only about one session in three.

But at least, he said, his record was better than that of his predecessor--and present opponent--Mike Curb, who made it to only two meetings during his four years in office.

“Abysmal!” McCarthy thundered.

Curb campaign manager Fred Karger had a comeback, however.

He said Curb didn’t attend due to moral scruples: He would be unable to vote on commission matters because of a conflict of interest posed by oil company campaign contributions. And besides, Karger said, it wasn’t as if he was slighting his duties as a commission member.

Curb always sent someone to do the voting for him. . . .
