1 Dead, 8 Hurt in Prison Brawl

A racial brawl broke out today among about 200 medium-security inmates at the Arizona State Prison, and one inmate was stabbed to death and eight others were wounded, a Department of Corrections spokesman said.

Tom Augherton, legislative liaison for the department, said the dead prisoner was black. At least two of the prisoners taken to hospitals with stab wounds were white, he said. Within two hours of the outbreak, the majority of the South Unit’s 598 inmates were rounded up.
