Angels’ Himes Is Finalist for White Sox Job

Angel scouting director Larry Himes is apparently one of two finalists for the general manager’s position with the Chicago White Sox, informed sources said here Thursday.

Lee Thomas, personnel director of the St. Louis Cardinals and a former Angel teammate of White Sox Manager Jim Fregosi, is thought to be the other finalist.

Himes, a significant contributor to the rebuilding of the Angel farm system since his appointment as scouting director in 1980, said by phone from his Orange County home that he had interviewed once for the White Sox post vacated by Ken Harrelson and was returning to Chicago today for a second interview.

“I expect something to be decided within a week--whether it’s me or someone else,” Himes said. “As far as I know, only two people have been invited for a second interview, and I’m one of them. I don’t know who the other person is.”

Mel Didier, a special assignment scout with the Dodgers, has also been interviewed by the White Sox.
