A conscience-stricken burglar walked nearly 42 miles so he could tearfully confess to police that he stole $35,000 worth of jewelry from a woman’s home three months ago to buy drugs.

An exhausted Chuck Wilson, 35, finally made it to San Francisco Thursday from his home in Santa Clara after collapsing less than halfway and spending the night in a San Mateo hospital.

Most of his two-day journey was on foot, although he rode a bus part of the way, police said.

‘Couldn’t Stand It’

“There has to be a better way,” Wilson said in tearfully telling Police Inspector Sam Hamilton he had to clear his conscience. “I couldn’t stand it any longer.”

Wilson said he took rings, necklaces and other valuables from a San Francisco woman’s home last July. He said he sold the loot to friends to buy amphetamines and other drugs.
