Gang killings in Los Angeles increased sharply in the first nine months of this year and may top 1980’s record in the street wars over turf and control of illicit drug dealing, police reported. There were 136 gang killings between Jan. 1 and Sept. 30 compared to 111 in the same period a year ago, police reported. There was a total of 193 such murders in 1980.
