Met Comeback Beats Red Sox to Win Series

Share

The New York Mets staged a dramatic rally for the second straight game and beat the Boston Red Sox, 8-5, Monday night at Shea Stadium in New York to win the World Series, 4 games to 3.

It was the second world championship for the Mets, who also won in 1969. The team became the second in World Series history to lose the first two games at home and come back to win. The Kansas City Royals did it last year.

The Red Sox took a 3-0 lead into the sixth inning behind left-hander Bruce Hurst, who beat the Mets twice during the Series, but New York scored three runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to take command.

Ray Knight broke a 3-3 tie with a leadoff homer off losing pitcher Calvin Schiraldi in the seventh.

Boston closed to within 6-5 in the eighth on a two-run double by Dwight Evans, but the Mets’ Jesse Orosco came on to get the last three outs with the tying run at second base, then retired the Red Sox in order in the ninth.

Darryl Strawberry led off the Mets’ eighth with a home run, and Orosco singled home the final run.

The Red Sox have not won the World Series since 1918, with losses in 1946, 1967 and 1975.
