A boxer was sentenced to a maximum of three years in prison, and his manager received up to six years in jail for removing half the padding from the fighter’s gloves to win a fight in New York.
Luis Resto, 30, and his manager-trainer Carlos (Panama) Lewis, 40, were convicted of two counts of second-degree assault, conspiracy and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon on Oct. 7.
They were convicted of removing half the horsehair padding from Resto’s glove, leading to the brutal battering of rising junior middleweight contender Billy Ray Collins Jr. in a fight June 16, 1983 at Madison Square Garden.
Collins suffered damage to his right eye, cuts, swelling and bruising on his face when he was punched by the previously light-hitting Resto. He never fought again after the beating and died in a drunken-driving related car crash less than a year later.
