Auto Club’s Plea for Freeways

The Automobile Club of Southern California has proposed a solution for our clogged freeways by constructing 400 miles at an estimated cost of $26 billion. This sage advice would increase profits for the auto clubs and oil companies, cost the already overburdened taxpayer a bundle and accomplish nothing in reducing the number of one-driver vehicles and accidents.

Where would such new freeways be built? Would we have to condemn existing homes and offices for these rights of passage? How would air pollution be contained? And how would we solve the traffic problem after year 2000 when these added freeways are again jammed?

The only rational and long-term, cost-effective plan is to expand public rapid transit, even if such systems are built over existing freeways.
