The City Council has voted to spend $2.1 million to combat drug abuse and gave tentative approval to spending an additional $2.5 million to clean local parks and acquire wetlands for new parks.

The $2.1 million will be used to strengthen local drug abuse and rehabilitation programs. The money also will be used to hire an undetermined number of police officers who will be assigned to drug enforcement, Mayor Maureen O’Connor said.

She said funding for both programs will come from the $11.4-million city budget surplus. The mayor said that additional funding for the drug programs also can be expected from the federal government.

Council members also endorsed a proposal by Councilman William Jones to create a San Diego Conservation Corps and a new Youth Development Department to coordinate the city’s youth programs.
